Michael Heitzman is a director and writer living in New York City. 

Recent: 42nd Street: Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, Beauty and the Beast: McCoy-Rigby Entertainment, 42nd Street: Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago (2018 Jeff Award nomination, Best Director), Newsies, Big River and Legally Blonde: Sacramento Music Circus, Beauty and the Beast, SHREK and Disney's The Little Mermaid: North Shore Music Theater (IRNE Award nomination, Best Director). VICES co-writer and director, Theatre Building, Chicago (Jeff Award nomination, Best Director, Best New Work).

He is the Resident Director of The Lucille Lortel Awards for ten years, which celebrates excellence Off-Broadway. 

For television, he co-wrote and directed the single camera situation comedy Scott Free starring Danny Burstein, Beth Leavel, Mary Testa and Kathy Najimy.  He also directed the Broadway medley with James Inglehart, Mamma Mia, Peter Gallagher and the Rockettes for the premiere episode of the Meredith Vieira daytime talk show.  He co-created and directed the pilot “Everett’s Broadway Beat” for Meredith Vieira’s musical director Everett Bradley.


Internationally he has worked as the Associate Director on Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Moscow, Paris and Amsterdam. He was also the Associate director of Disney’s The Little Mermaid in Germany, Paper Mill Playhouse, Pittsburgh CLO, Dallas Summer Musicals, 5th Avenue. 

A 2009 Dramatist Guild Fellow, he and longtime writing partner Ilene Reid are co-writers of the Grammy-nominated song “Throw That Girl Around” from the Broadway musical Swing!  Their musical Bingo! The Winning Musical, co-written with David Holcenberg, had a successful off-­Broadway run and won the 2007 Bay Area Critics Awards for Best Musical. He and Ms. Reid are currently working with director/choreographer Josh Rhodes on their new musical Solanaand have begun writing a musical adaptation of the Patrick Dennis novel, Genius.  For samples and more information about my writing, go to www.heitzmanreid.com
